Kim Wall was reported missing after mini submarine Nautilus failed to return to the Refshaleøen harbor after her scheduled interview with Peter Madsen. The submarine was found sunken the following morning and Madsen was taken into custody by police after being rescued from the water.

Between 21 August and 29 November, parts of Wall's dismembered body were found in different locations around the area with the help of cadaver dogs – the pups proved to be essential in solving this case. Charged with her murder, Madsen was convicted and sentenced to life in prison on 25 April 2018 by Copenhagen City Court. 2, 3
